What is a random drug testing pool?
A random testing pool is a group of CDL drivers from which a third-party administrator pulls names at random for drug and alcohol testing. The selection process must be truly random and based on FMCSA's minimum annual rates.
Who needs to be in a random pool?
Any driver who operates a commercial motor vehicle requiring a CDL must be in a random pool. That includes company drivers and owner-operators. Drivers are typically placed in their employer's pool, while owner-operators with their own authority join a consortium.
Owner-operators and consortium pools
Because a pool of one cannot generate a valid random selection, owner-operators must join a consortium. Our owner-operator program places you in a compliant pool the same day.
How random selections work
- The C/TPA generates random selections throughout the year
- Selected drivers receive a notification with collection site info
- You report to the clinic and complete the DOT urine collection
- Results are sent to the designated Medical Review Officer (MRO)
- The MRO releases the result to the employer or C/TPA
What happens if you are selected
Report to the collection site as soon as you can after being notified. Bring a government-issued photo ID. The collection is a standard 5-panel DOT urine test (and breath alcohol if applicable). Most drivers are in and out within 30 minutes.
What happens if you miss or refuse a test
A missed or refused test is treated as a positive result. The violation goes on your FMCSA Clearinghouse record and you cannot operate a commercial motor vehicle until you complete the return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
